Sierra Leone– A fire incident in Gbekie town in Dodo Chiefdom in Kenema district has reportedly destroyed farm products worth millions of Leones and a water facility thereby affecting hundreds of families.
Speaking to one Lansana Bockarie, resident of the town, he explained that the mysterious fire broke out in the mountain called Gbolia overlooking the town. He said the fire spread across the bushes burning scores of rice bans and plantations left behind by farmers.
This has caused serious food crisis in that part of the country and there is urgent need for humanitarian intervention to avoid the situation from getting worse, Lansana warned.
Lansana also explained that the entire polythene pipe work from the main water dam on the nearby hill was destroyed by the fire leaving the dam tried up. He went on that the people have therefore resorted to drinking swamp water since there is no alternative and as a consequence, diarrhoea and dysentery have started emerging within the community. Our fear is that these transmissible diseases may become widespread in the community, he stated.
