NATIONAL FOREST: Grants available for landowners to lower fire risk

USA — Calif.- People who own land in or near the San Bernardino National Forest can apply for grants that will pay for up to half the cost of performing work that will decrease the spread of wildfires and improve the ecosystem.
The Natural Resources Conservation Service which, like the U.S. Forest Service, is a part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture is coordinating the program.
Landowners can receive financial assistance for removing dense vegetation, creating fire breaks, planting vegetation in order to prevent erosion in burn areas and creating paths for water to flow down hillsides.
The deadline to apply for the grants is July 17. The applicants will be ranked by the size of their acreage, said National Resources Conservation Service spokeswoman Anita Brown.
Grants are available on private and tribal lands in areas of the San Bernardino and San Jacinto mountains including Big Bear, Angelus Oaks, Forest Falls, Oak Glen, Running Springs, Green Valley Lake, Arrow Bear Lake, Cedar Glen, Lake Arrowhead, Twin Peaks, Blue Jay, Agua Fria, Sky Forest, Rim Forest, Crest Park, Crestline, Lake Gregory, Idyllwild, Pine Cove and Fern Valley, a news release said.
The money is coming out of a $2.5 million fund, Brown said.
