A Bombardier CL415 MP aeroplane and AS365 N3 Dauphin helicopter belonging to the MMEA and a Hercules C130 aeroplane belonging to the RMAF departed simultaneously at 4.20 pm.

MMEA Deputy Director-General (Operations) Laksamana Madya Datuk Che Hassan Jusoh said the air assets which carried logistical equipment, MMEA and RMAF personnel as well as media representatives were expected to arrive within two hours of departure.

He said the Bombardier aircraft which could suck 6,137 litres of water within 12 seconds, would be used for ‘Water Bombing’ operations, while the AS 365 N3 Dauphin helicopter would be used for ‘Fire Spotting’ operations.

The C130 aeroplane would play a role as logistics transporter.

Meanwhile, Commander of the Air Operations Command Headquarters, Ministry of Defence, Lt Gen Datuk Sri Akcbal Abdul Samad said, all the operations cost was estimated to be RM1.5 million.

He said 29 MMEA personnel were involved in the operations to put out the fire scheduled to begin tomorrow until Wednesday.

“Twenty-five MMEA personnel were assigned as crew members of the aircraft, while another four were operational aid crew,” he said.

This is the second time the MMEA launched an operation to assist Indonesia in putting out fires in the South Sumatera area after the first one in 2013.

Among the operations involving the Bombardier aircraft previously were putting out the forest fires in Banting, Gunung Jerai, Gong Kedak and Bukit Bendera.

In Asia, only Malaysia has the Bombardier aircraft. – Bernama, October 9, 2015.Malaysia sends help to Sumatera to fight forest fires
