Forest fires damage over one thousand hectares in Eastern Cuba

Cuba — Three fires still active for several days in rural zones of the eastern Cuban province of Camaguey have thus far damage over 1 thousand 200 hectares of forest and pasture areas.
The local forest management company and the forest ranger´s corps are fighting the fires, which are fueled by extreme dryness of the land, high temperature and strong winds.
A blaze is burning on pasturelands and areas of felled trees and threatens to affect a natural forest in the locality of Guaimaro and another two fires are affecting important forest reserves.
Scarce rainfall has been reported in these areas since January, which has favored the conditions for the appearance of blazes. The situation has been described as extremely dangerous by the local meteorology office due to the possibility for fires to break out in the zone.
