Siberia: Wildfire zone shrinks five times over past 24 hours

Russia — Twenty-eight forest fires were burning on 3,575.7 hectares in the Siberian Federal District as of Wednesday morning, the district department of the Federal Forestry Agency (Rosleskhoz) said.
The wildfires were raging in Buryatia (twelve fires on 83.7 hectares) and the Trans-Baikal territory (14 on 3,489.9 hectares).
Twelve forest fires were confined to 3,176.9 hectares, including five fires to 2,966 hectares in the Trans-Baikal territory.
Sixty-one forest fires were put out on 18,352.5 hectares in the Republics of Buryatia, Altai and Khakassia, the Trans-Baikal, Altai and Krasnoyarsk territories and the Irkutsk region as of Wednesday morning.
“Twenty-one forest fires were extinguished on 17,715 hectares in the Trans-Baikal territory and Buryatia,” the report said.
The wildfire zone in Siberia has reduced in area by five times; fires were burning on 16,487 hectares the day before.
Some 493 foresters and smoke jumpers, 79 fire engines and twelve aircraft were assigned on the firefighting mission. Negligence of local residents and agricultural fires caused the majority of fires.
A fire alert was announced in Chita and the Baley, Akshinsky and Kyrinsky districts of the Trans-Baikal territory and the Mukhorshibirsky district of Buryatia.
An emergency situation regime was put into place in nine districts of the Trans-Baikal territory and the majority of districts of Buryatia.
