USA — Authorities say the driver of a 5,500-gallon fuel tanker suffered burns to his hands and face after his vehicle and an above-ground tank caught fire west of Belgrade.

Art Castricone, the Central Valley Fire District’s marshal, says firefighters were called to the Central Park area at about 5:15 p.m. Monday on a report of a large grass fire. Two dozen people who live within a half-mile radius of the fire were evacuated.

The 55-year-old driver, whose name hasn’t been released, was transferring fuel from the vehicle to the tank at the time. He suffered first- and second-degree burns and is being treated at a Bozeman hospital.

Pressure release valves prevented an explosion, and the fire was controlled about an hour and half after it was reported.

The driver works for Story Distributing Co. in Bozeman.
