Spain — A FOREST fire raging out of control in Ibiza has forced around 100 people to flee their homes on the Vistalegre urbanisation for their own safety.

The flames broke out in the Es Cubells area, in the town of Sant Josep de sa Talaia just before 16.00hrs and have already wiped out nearly 70 hectares of pine forest.

High winds have been hindering firefighters’ work and forced emergency services to send back-up from the mainland, with Guardia Civil helicopters drafted in from Bétera (Valencia province) and 100 members of the Armed Forces were due to arrive by boat last night (Saturday).

This is the second wildfire reported in the same area within a week, although the last one only took two hours to bring under control.

The current fire continues to burn and authorities are struggling to keep it contained, emergency services report.
