Wildfire destroys 600 hectare forests

Nepal — Wildfire has destroyed 600 hectare forest land at various VDCs in Panchthar district in the last few days.
According to District Forest Office, Panchthar, fire has affected around 1,000 hectare of community forests located in Lumfawung, Amarpur, Yangnam, Phidim, Rabi, Mauwa, and Suvang VDCs.
Security personnel with the support of locals and forest guards are still trying to contain the fire at Mauwa, Yangnam, and Salleri community forests, district police office informed.
Around 600 hectare forests at Lumfawung, Yangnam, Mauwa, Amarpur, Suvang and Ravi have been reduced to cinders, district forest officer Mahendra Prasad Chaudhary said.
The bushfire destroyed the houses of Bhola Paudel and Binod Paudel in Lumfabung.
This year, wildfires broke out in 135 forests destroying property worth around Rs 65.5 million.
