Philippines — AT LEAST 40 hectares of high-value crops went up in smoke in a more than two hours grass fire in the province of Zamboanga del Norte, the police said Saturday.

The Zamboanga del Norte Police Office (ZDNPO) said the fire incident broke out around 3:10 p.m. Thursday in the village of ZNAC, Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte.

The grass fire was placed under control around 5:30 p.m. of the same day through the joint efforts of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and environment personnel.

Investigation showed the fire originated from a lot intended for vegetable garden near the small village of settlers.

Fanned by strong wind, the flame rapidly burned some 40 hectares of land planted with fruit trees, rubber and other grown trees.

The cost of damage is still to be determined by the authorities.
