India — A major fire broke out Thursday night at Mount Japfü which has reportedly spread across the Japfü Peak belt. Sources fear that the fire which was on for the second day may even reach the Dzükuo valley and could devastate the bio diversity conservation area. A team from the forest department would carry out an aerial survey Saturday morning, while Southern Angami Public Organization, Southern Angami Youth Organization, Kigwema Youth Organization and Angami Youth Organization members would also climb the ridge to monitor the situation.
Though the cause was yet to be ascertained, it was suspected that the fire could have been triggered due to carelessness of some hikers.
Parliamentary secretary Vikho-u Yhoshu along with forest department officials, army from Chakhabama and Zakhama, disaster management, SAPO, SAYO, SDO (C) Jakhama and police reached rushed to the spot. Angami Youth Organization appealed to all the neighboring villagers to extend help to douse the fire.
Southern Angami Public Organization (SAPO) has condemned the man-made forest fire at Mt. Japfu. In a statement, SAPO press secretary acknowledged the part played by various NGOs, mainly the Kigwema Youth Organization, Southern Angami Youth Organization, district administration, Kohima, Forest department, Disaster Management officials and Defence.
SAPO further appealed to all concerned that strict action will be taken against the defaulters as per the existing law of the land.
