USA — A controlled grass fire that severely burned a man in Nebraska was set without permission from the landowner.
That’s according to testimony from Rushville Fire Chief Dwaine Sones that the Associated Press has obtained.
Sones acknowledged in a May 7 deposition that firefighters did not contact the landowner and did not fill out a permit to start the blaze until afterward. The deposition came in a federal lawsuit filed by burn victim Bryan Bluefield Jr.
Bluebird was sleeping in the field in the town of Whiteclay when firefighters started the blaze. He alleges authorities did not thoroughly check the field that’s frequented by panhandlers.
An attorney for the Fire Department argues officials had implied permission to start to the fire and denies the negligence allegations.
