Canada — 50 homes were evacuated after a brush fire sparked and was spread by high winds in the Wood Buffalo area of Fort McMurray on Tuesday evening.

Cst. Christina Wilkins of the Wood Buffalo RCMP says the Fort McMurray brush fire started around 6:30 p.m.

Wood Buffalo RCMP along with the Regional Emergency Services all attended the scene and assisted with the evacuation of the homes, scene containment and traffic control.

High winds in the area caused the fire to spread quickly, but crews were able to get the fire under control and residents have been allowed to return to their homes.

According to Cst. Wilkins, no one was injured in the fire.

Fort McMurray emergency services will continue to monitor the area to ensure no hot spots flare up.

The fire is under investigation by the RCMP and Fort McMurray fire department. Anyone with information on the blaze is asked to contact the Wood Buffalo RCMP at 780 788 4000 or Crime Stoppers at 1 800 222 8477.
