Fiji — QUICK action from the Navua Fire Station saved the possible damage of homes near Viti Corp Company Limited on Saturday evening.

National Fire Authority CEO John O’Connor said his team in Navua received a call from residents shortly after 6pm of a grass fire near Viti Corp.

“By 8pm, the fire was put out and there was no damage or what could have been possible damage to nearby homes and farms,” he said.

He said investigations to the cause of the fire would begin today.

“On Saturday, the main focus was putting out the fire before it spread to nearby farms and homes.”

Mr O’Connor said fires put people’s lives and properties at risk. He said they also attended to six grass fires in Nadi on Saturday.

“We must change our attitude towards fire safety and regard fire safety as very important and take the necessary actions to mitigate or eliminate potential sources of fires at home and around us.”
