Forest fires hit Fokida, Marathona

Greece — It’s been a tough summer for forest fires in Greece and another struck the Avra of Marathona, burning pine trees and threatening homes. As a precaution, firefighters evacuated homeowners because of strong winds fanning the blaze which made their work difficult.

Some 40 firefighters with 14 fire tracks, two fire-fighting planes and two helicopters took part in trying to extinguish the fire which broke out in Avra, between Kato Souli and the port of Agia Marina late on the morning of Aug. 5.

It was reported that shortly before the fire broke our, there was an accident in the region when a vehicle crashed into a electricity pole. Another fire was burning in Sernikaki of Fokida in agricultural and forest area..

According to the General Secretariat of Civil Protection of the Ministry of Public Order and Citizen Protection, the risk is high for a fire in the region of Attica (Troizinia and Cythera included), as well as in Boeotia, Euboea, Argolida, Korinthia, Arcadia (Tripolis), Lakonia (Molaoi), Chania, Rethymno, and Cyclades while in Skiros , Chios and Lesvos the danger of a fire is also very high.

The General Secretariat of Civil Protection has informed the state authorities, as well as the organizations of regional and local administrations to be highly prepared in order to deal immediately with any fire episodes that many occur.

According to the previsions, people are asked to avoid any activities in the countryside that can provoke fire by accident, such as throwing cigarettes, burning of dry grass and usage of machines that cause sparks.
