Greece — A wildfire raging between the popular seaside resorts of Markopoulo and Porto Rafti in eastern Attica since early Friday afternoon has been placed under partial control. The fire brigade said in the evening that the active fire front had been significantly contained, averting further risk to both houses and woodland.

The wildfire broke out in the region of Herovouni and was being fought by 80 firemen with 30 fire engines, eight water-bombing aircraft and two helicopters. The blaze had passed through the gardens of residences in Markopoulo, causing damage to buildings and porches.

Traffic on Myrinountos Avenue was interrupted because of the blaze.

An investigation is underway into the cause of the fire. The possibility of arson has not been ruled out.
