Algeria — Nearly 1,900 hectares of forests have been ravaged by forest fires since June countrywide, said Tuesday Director General of Forests Mohamed Seghir Noual.

Since the beginning of the 2013 campaign of fight against forest fires, blaze destroyed over 300 hectares of forests, i.e. 18% of the overall forest area, and 1,600 hectares of brushwood, Noual told APS.

At least 332 fires were recorded, and all those fires were brought under control, he said.

The fires were especially virulent last week due to the scorching heat that hit the northern and inland regions of the country reaching peak temperatures for this period, he added.

“We have witnessed a very difficult summer in 2012. But owing to the mobilization of citizens and local authorities, the number of forest fires has significantly decreased this year,” he explained.

A total of 99,061 hectares of forests were destroyed by fire in 2012, he said.
