USA — An 8,500-acre wildfire burning north of Gooding forced officials to close the highway Sunday afternoon. The closure remained in effect Monday morning.

Idaho Highway 46 was shut down when the lightning-caused fire crossed the road at about 3 p.m. Road closures stretch from Gooding to U.S. Highway 20.

The Fir Grove Fire was reported earlier Sunday afternoon. Fire crews are not asking anyone to evacuate, and no structures are currently threatened.

A house was threatened by the blaze Sunday, but a rural fire department was able to push back the flames. A power pole damaged in the fire caused officials to reroute power.

More than 160 firefighters, 20 engines and 10 aircraft are working to extinguish the wildfire, which has burned up to Thorn Creek Reservoir but is still about 10 miles away from Magic Reservoir.

Firefighters hope to have the blaze contained by 8 p.m. Monday.
