United Kingdom —  FIRE crews across Gwent were busy this afternoon tackling 10 grass fires since midday.

On Monday night South Wales Fire and Rescue service received 62 calls to 999 in a 12 hour period from 6pm, including reports of 12 deliberate grass fires in the Newport area.

Today a crew from Malpas were called to a grass fire in the St Julians area of Newport shortly before 4pm, with Cefn Fforest crew mobilised to a refuse fire in the Hengoed area shortly after 5pm before being diverted to a refuse fire near Tir-y-berth two hours later, which turned out to be a false alarm.

Fire fighters from Maindee attended a skip fire in Clarence Place, Newport, just before 6pm.
