Malasya — FOR the third time in a year, a fire broke out at the Jelutong landfill on Saturday evening.
The 6.40pm fire was identified as a surface fire.
It affected the south-western part of the landfill.
Penang Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the fire was brought under control in six hours in the early hours of Sunday morning.
However, he noted on his Facebook profile that the fire would take at least a week to be put out completely.
Phee was at the scene on Saturday evening with Sungai Pinang assemblyman Lim Siew Khim.
Checks at the dumpsite yesterday morning showed that smoke was still billowing from the affected area.
There was a peat fire at the landfill in June last year, resulting in smoke emanating from the area for about a week.
In March, another fire at the landfill engulfed an area of about 30m by 100m.
