Australia — A PLAN to make homeowners in bushfire risk zones face mandatory inspections at point of sale has been rejected by Mitcham Council.

Councillors failed to support a staff proposal to lobby the State Government to investigate and consult on a change to law which would make it compulsory for homes in bushfire risk zones to be inspected and rated on fire risk.

A report presented to the council last night said an inspection checklist might assess whether a home had an independent water supply, clear gutters, managed vegetation and well-maintained fuel loads before being given a rating for the risk.

The report stated “the scheme is not envisaged to discourage purchasers but rather to ensure they are informed when making a decision to live within a bushfire risk area.”

Cr Mark Ward told the meeting the proposal was “terrible”.

“I think education and information is a good way to go,” Cr Ward said.

“Option one (to lobby the government on the change) is terrible.”

“Throw option one in the bin.”

Cr Elaine Grimm also spoke against the idea.

“I’m very … concerned about this,” Cr Grimm said.

“This is thought up by people who don’t live in a bushfire area.”

The council voted to instead lobby the government to further investigate and consult on ways to increase bushfire awareness and safety in risk areas.

The idea had previously been discussed with Emergency Services Minister Michael O’Brien and had been referred to the Parliament’s Natural Resources Committee.

Mitcham Mayor Michael Picton last month said the proposal could affect 26,000 of its 67,000 residents.
