Woman, 76, dies after brush fires grow out of control

USA — A 76-year-old Monroe County woman who had been burning brush died Wednesday after the wind-swept fires grew out of control, authorities said.

Milan Area Firefighters were dispatched at 3 p.m. to a field fire on Darling Road near Tuttlehill Road, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. They arrived to find a large wooded area engulfed in flames.

The body of Anna Eliva Pinto of Milan was found near the eastern edge of the wooded area. Investigators determined she had been working in the area burning brush in several small piles.

“Due to windy conditions the fires grew out of control and engulfed most of the wooded area. … (Pinto) was unable to escape the fire and was overcome by the smoke and flames,” reads a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
