Australia — A former South Australian Police Commissioner has been appointed to head Tasmania’s bushfire inquiry.

With a budget of$670,000 Malcolm Hyde will have six months to examine the causes, the response and the adequacy of agency planning in the bushfires.

Tasmania’s Premier Lara Giddings has told parliament the disaster has cost Government agencies $45 million to date.

An unknown portion of that cost will be recouped from the Federal Government but an extra $22 million from state coffers is being allocated to cover the costs.

“My Government will continue to support communities affected by the devastating fire as they proceed with their recovery,” he said.

The Red Cross bushfire appeal raised $7 million.
