WaterRF to host Wildfire Readiness and Response Workshop to prepare water utilities

USA — Last year, approximately 43,000 wildfires were reported in the U.S., burning a total of 6.4 million acres, or 10,000 square miles of land, according to a press release.
These wildfires have far-lingering effects beyond just the loss of forestation and wildfire. Burned areas are vulnerable to erosion and mud slides that can fill up sources of drinking water with ash, silt, fire retardant chemicals and contaminants, impacting both water quality and quantity.
In an effort to ensure that water utilities are prepared, the Water Research Foundation (WaterRF) is hosting a Wildfire Readiness and Response Workshop April 4, 2013 in Denver, Colo. to give water utility managers and others interested parties more information on the impacts wildfires have on water quality and watershed ecology and how these effects can be mitigated or minimized, stated the release.
Individuals who attend the conference at Kevin Taylors at the Opera House in Denver will here from industry and government experts, learn about the WaterRFs subscriber survey on wildfires, how to address and reduce risk of wildfire contamination, the impacts to water quality and quantity, and restoration and management practices and other critical topics.
