USA — The Santa Fe National Forest is using prescribed fire to clear out dead trees and other debris on 300 acres in the Jemez Mountains.

The project put up some smoke Tuesday and is expected to last several weeks.

The work should be done by May.

Officials say smoke will be visible from State Road 4 between La Cueva and the Valle Grande, Jemez and Zia pueblos, Bernalillo and Rio Rancho.

In the evenings, the smoke will settle into low lying areas. It should lift when the sun rises. Residents living in low-lying areas may be most affected.

Officials are recommending those who suffer from allergies, heart or lung diseases or have other health problems stay indoors and keep windows, doors and vents closed.
