USA — The chief of the Knotts Island (N.C.) Volunteer Fire Department died fighting a brush fire Sunday evening.

According to the local television station, WAVY TV10, Chief Scott Morrison was working on suppressing a brush fire when he collapsed into respiratory and cardiac arrest. He was treated at the scene by Currituck EMS and transported to a hospital in nearby Virginia. He was pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m.

The television station reported the fire was reported at 3:18 and Currituck County EMS personnel and members of the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office, also responded.

In 1984, Chief Morrison became a firefighter and worked his way up to become chief, according to the television station. He is survived by his wife and two children.
