South Africa — NELSON Mandela Bay firefighters spent most of yesterday battling 22 bush fires.
So bad was one fire in the Greenbushes area that authorities had to close the N2 near the Draaifontein Road turnoff after six cars were involved in a collision because of poor visibility.
Municipal spokeswoman Marthie Nel said one person was injured and taken to hospital. The N2 reopened later.
Most of the fires occurred in the Greenbushes area, Nel said .
Apart from the six-car pile-up, nobody else was injured and no lives or property were in danger.
By last night, firefighters were still trying to extinguish the Draaifontein Road fire.
Nel said the cause of the fires was not known.
