Bushfire Displaces 800 Persons in Two Months

Ghana — About 800 persons, mostly farmers in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region, have been displaced by bushfire since January 2013.
Some of the affected communities in the Sekyere Central District are Asaase Bonso, Dramani Akura, Asare Nkwanta, Dome and Moshie Panin.
The latest bushfire has rendered some farmers homeless at Dagomba in Drobonso also in the Sekyere Central District.
The displaced farmers have lost virtually all their personal belongings, and are putting up with relations and friends in the neighbourbood.
The Sekyere Central District National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Co-ordinator, Fuseini Donkor, lamented over the attitude of the farmers in the indiscriminate setting of bushfires to clear and prepare their lands for major farming seasons.
He indicated that since October of 2012, NADMO had been embarking on anti-bushfire campaigns ahead of the farming season, but to no avail.
Mr. Fuseini Donkor appealed to traditional authorities in such farming communities to educate the farmers to stop roofing their houses with thatch, which fuels fire outbreaks.
The Member of Parliament for Drobonso, Alex Adomako Mensah, who visited the Dagomba community to commiserate with the affected farmers, advised them to weed around their houses to forestall any future outbreaks.
He appealed to philanthropists to also donate to the NADMO offices to enable them respond to such affected victims.
Through the benevolence of Joemax Company Limited, the MP donated some bags of cement and roofing sheets to the Dagomba community.
Some of the affected residents appealed for support from philanthropists to construct more formidable houses with roofing sheets.
