South Africa — A VELD fire destroyed a remote section of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Nature Reserve yesterday afternoon.

Municipal spokesman Kupido Baron said the blaze came only days after firefighters spent almost a week extinguishing a fire at the nearby Willows Resort along Marine Drive.

“There were two fires in the same vicinity. One was inside the campus, which led to vegetation damage while the other was deeper in the nearby bushes but not on NMMU property,” he said.

“The vegetation fire at NMMU was extinguished within two hours while the other fire is being monitored as it is more difficult for firefighters to [reach] it.”

Baron said several firefighting vehicles were dispatched to both scenes.

NMMU spokeswoman Debbie Derry said a fire marshal was monitoring the fire, which was extinguished by last night.

“It was in the bush and not an immediate threat to any property,” she said.
