South Africa — Fire fighters are battling to contain a runaway veld fire at Kluitjieskraal near Wolseley in the Western Cape.

Fire services spokesperson Roysten Harris says it is burning out of control on farms in the area.

Harris says all resources from its Stellenbosch Fire Station have been deployed to assist farmers and workers in fighting the flames.

“The fire is now running towards some farms where fire fighters are trying to bring it under control due to strong winds. We have 130 fire fighters on scene with five helicopters,” says Harris.

Meanwhile, the fire in the Wemmershoek Mountains between Paarl and Franschhoek, which had been raging for nearly a week, has been contained.

Two houses were damaged as well as thousands of hectares of fynbos.

Harris adds: “The fire has been contained, but is not yet under control. we have ground crews on the line to prevent any flare ups.

Also, we have two helicopters on standby should there be any flare ups they can tend to that.”
