Australia — The Southern Grampians Shire says people are putting their lives at risk if they use non-approved bunkers as protection from bushfires.

It is warning landholders that only one manufacturer builds bunkers which have been approved for bushfire use.

The shire’s Laurie Farrugia says some companies are advertising bunkers as wine cellars or storage bunkers to avoid building regulations.

He says people should exercise caution.

“They’re only meant to be used as a place of last resort when they can’t get out of a property in the event of a bushfire,” he said.

“So they don’t want to be placing themselves into some sort of structure that hasn’t been proven to protect life for a set period of time during a fire.”
