Russia — The freezing temperatures which have hit Russia this winter arte not unprecedented. According to chronicles, similar cold temperatures gripped Russia in the 16th and the 17th centuries.
This is what Director of the Russian Institute of Geography Vladimir Kotlyakov said at a conference held in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg.
The extreme heat of the summer of 2010, which caused fires at peat bogs outside Moscow, was not unprecedented either, the scientist said. Based on historical weather observations, such hot summers occur in Russia about 4 times in every 100 years.
