South Africa–– CAPE TOWN – Two people were killed in a shack fire in Joe Slovo Park in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Authorities said the bodies were burnt beyond recognition.
This was one of several fires across the Cape Peninsula, from Gugulethu to Sir Lowry’s Pass at the weekend.
These fires left close to 60 people destitute.
Late on Saturday night, a fire also destroyed the Greenpoint Bowling Clubhouse.
The blaze destroyed most of the club house.
Club President John Taylor said no one was hurt and it is not clear what started the fire.
The alarm was set off and I was called in a while later, but it was too late. The fire brigade came and because of the age of some of the timber in the building, the fire just ripped through it in no time at all.
Meanwhile, Cape Town firefighters said they put out nearly 80 veld fires at the weekend as well.
They believe children are the main culprits behind vegetation fires.
The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services Theo Layne said vegetation fires are now on the rise.
We find that children are very much responsible for starting these fires. After the children come home from school in the afternoon, we tend to see a rapid increase in the amount of vegetation fires,” said Layne.
Officials said they can fight up to 70 fires daily in the month of January.
