Italy–– Palermo – There’s no way of stopping wildfires from choking Sicily. Especially hit are the cities of Palermo and Messina. The fires that have been sweeping across Sicily since Wednesday, stretching from the coast to woodlands, wildlife reserves and towns are still active. Fear was raised Saturday afternoon by an alarm launched by the Generosa Police where a man remained trapped inside a stable surrounded by fire. The man was subsequently rescued by the Carabinieri. Industrial plants and private homes are under threat. Dozens of buildings have been evacuated. In some cases, schools have been closed as a precautionary measure. There are about a dozen fires still active and it will be necessary to wait until Sunday dawn to get the fire-fighting aircraft back into operation. . .
