Australia –– The State Government is unwilling to reveal a crucial report into the Margaret River bushfires until after the March 2013 election, the Opposition claims.

Premier Colin Barnett has said he will publicly release an independent inquiry into the November blazes which devastated communities in Nannup and Margaret River.

But shadow emergency services minister Margaret Quirk has criticised the Premier for taking so long to release the report, which she claims he received on June 22.

Ms Quirk said the report was now unlikely to go before cabinet before Parliament rises in November and accused Mr Barnett of trying to suppress the report until after the election.

In parliament, Mr Barnett has denied suppressing the report and said it is still being considered by the State Emergency Management Committee.

But Ms Quirk said the independent report needed to be released before next bushfire season.

“Mr Barnett claimed, despite not having read it, that it was a technical incident analysis contending that the Keely report was the principal examination of the fires.

“Mr Barnett has a short memory, as the Keelty report was restricted to ascertaining the cause of the fires, and issues concerning how the fires were managed were excluded,” she said.
“It also did not attach the 80 submissions made by community members about the fires.”
