Australia– HEROIC acts during the devastating Black Saturday bushfires have been recognised with the awarding of 27 National Emergency Medals.

Country Fire Authority chairman Kerry Murphy presented the medals to members in a ceremony at Whittlesea yesterday.

More than 19,000 CFA members were involved in frontline firefighting, incident management and behind the scenes support during the fires on and around February 7, 2009.

The 27 medal recipients were selected from more than 4500 nominations and chosen for their “unique contribution and commitment” in response to the fires, which claimed 173 lives and left more than 400 injured.

The bushfires were subsequently declared a nationally significant emergency alongside cyclone Yasi and the Queensland floods of December 2010 and January 2011.
