10’s take to the skies

USA–– Dear Friends of 10 Tanker:

As you may know, The DC10s operated by 10 Tanker Air Carrier have been taking to the skies a lot lately to help suppress and contain devastating wildfires in Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, California, and Washington. But were writing because we need strong public support to make sure 10 Tanker is able to keep operating and to ensure that, in the future, our DC10s can respond quickly to wildfires.

If you support the work that 10 Tankers DC10s are doing, we would like to stay in touch with you about ways you can help us keep fighting fires.

Since our first drop on the Sawtooth Fire, near San Diego in 2006, The 10s have flown over 500 successful missions. They are proven to be the most efficient and cost-effective firefighting aircraft. The DC10s capacity for carrying and delivering large quantities of fire retardant gives it a unique ability to respond quickly and comprehensively to a fire, which saves valuable time, taxpayer dollars, homes and lives.

But we might not be in business for much longer. Currently the US Forest Service uses the DC10s on a call when needed basis. This means the DC10s may be called upon but may not be ready or able to respond in the critical early hours of a wildfires rapid development. This is not an effective way for the US Forest Service to employ these powerful firefighting weapons. The current arrangement delays response time that is crucial to containing fires and jeopardizes the safety of communities near the fires.
Nor is the current arrangement a sustainable way for 10 Tanker to exist. The company has significant fixed costs to operate and maintain the DC10s. Further, it creates zero job stability for the employees of 10 Tanker.

If we do not have a long-term contract, there will come a day when we cannot answer the call.
