Cuba–– Havana — The Cuban Word Keepers reported that during the first five months of 2012, the so-called dry period of the year, forest fires were reduced in Cuba.
The effectiveness of the campaign against forest fires in the 2011-2012 period was evidenced when 2,865 hectares affected a third of the standard in the last five years, when the annual standard was of almost 10,000 hectares.
This was due to a better organization level by all the institutions, said specialist Maylivis Ynowuje.
A second factor, she said, and mentioned by Cuban Granma newspaper, was the anticipated start of the rains in the second half of April, a different behaviour to what has occurred in the last 10 years.
During the January-May period there were 376 forest fires.
Among the main causes of fires, an expert said 89 percent of the fires were because of negligence.
