Australia – The Victorian Government has released an updated bushfire management plan for the first time in six years, with recommendations from the 2009 Bushfire Royal Commission.

The royal commission held into the Black Saturday fires, where 173 people died, determined the protection of human life must be the highest priority when preventing fires on public land.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment’s Lee Miezis says the latest bushfire code focuses on prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.

“The code of practice was reviewed in accordance with the requirements of the Conservation, Forests and Lands Act and this process included a state-wide targeted engagement that occurred between April and May in 2011 and then a consultation draft was released for 60 days for public consultation late last year.”
