95 pc forest area prone to wildfire in Makawanpur

Nepal– Ninety-five percent of the forest area in Makawanpur district is prone to wildfire during the summer.
The District Forest Office, Makawanpur, told RSS only six out of the 43 Village Development Committees (VDCs) in the district are at lesser risk of bushfires.
So far no incident of forest fires has been reported in the Kulekhani and Markhu VDCs among these six VDCs.
Similarly, Phaparbari, Chhatiwan, Harnamadi, Agra and Gogane VDCs in the district have not experienced any bushfires in the last five years, said Ranger at the district forest office, Achyut Upadhyaya.
He said 8,760 hectares of forest was at lesser risk of forest fires and the six VDCs that are located in this area occupy only five percent of the total forest cover in the district, leaving 54 percent forest area at risk of forest fires.
The District Forest Office, Makwanpur said the VDCs at high risk of forest fires are Raigaon, Dhiyal, Manahari, Handikhola, Bajrabarahi and Phakhel among others.
