South Korea — Despite unfavorable weather conditions, like an autumn drought, Seogwipo City has managed to avoid any forest fires in 2011, its seventh consecutive year without incident.

According to Seogwipo City, this was possible due to intensive forest fire prevention measures executed from February to May and from November to mid-December this year.

During those periods, the city installed 13 forest fire prevention centers and posted about 100 fire guards for surveillance.

The city installed CCTVs at four different locations, including Gogeunsan, and prevent hikers from entering 73 locations (covering 10,299 hectares) throughout Seogwipio City.

Along with these preventative measures, GPS units were given to guards and firemen to speed up the fire extinguishing process.

“Support of residents and hikers made this possible. We continue to prevent forest fires,” said Seogwipo City official Hyun Moon Ik, who is in charge of forestry preservation.
