Australia — A CFS education workshop established on the Eyre Peninsula has been highly commended in a national award.
The CFS’s Firey Women education workshop was commended at the Australian Safer Communities Award last Thursday after being named the state winner last month.
The workshop targets women in rural communities and was developed after the 2005 Wangary bushfire.
Research after the Wangary fires showed there was a need to deliver bushfire safety information and education.
The program started on Eyre Peninsula but now almost 400 women have participated throughout the state.
The workshops include practical exercises such as operating pumps and fire fighting equipment, to developing an understanding of bushfire warnings and fire danger ratings.
