Tanzania — Mbinga District authorities in Ruvuma Region have vowed to deal squarely with village, ward and division leaders whose areas will be a source of bushfires.

The Mbinga District Commissioner, Mr Edmund Mjengwa, sounded the warning recently during a councillors meeting.

Mr Mjengwa said some village, ward and division leaders condoned malpractices, like the setting of fire in bushes, which resulted to the destruction of the environment.

“I am warning you that stern measures would be taken against any local leader whose area would be a source of bushfires,” the DC cautioned, urging farmers not to use fire in clearing their farms

He warned that local leaders who would be found harbouring the culprits would be prosecuted. Mr Mjengwa appealed to the leaders to educate people on the importance of conserving and protecting the environment.

“People should be sensitised on how unscrupulous felling of trees affects the environment,” he said, urging the leaders to ensure that water sources were protected.
