United Kingdom — Fire chiefs say “complicated wind patterns” spread a grass fire over 50 hectares (125 acres) and took it in two directions in south Wales.

Large volumes of smoke prompted calls to the emergency services from throughout the Ebbw Valley about the fire in Caerphilly county.

The blaze above Cox’s Quarry on Mynydd y Lan near Abercarn first broke out on Saturday but died down overnight.

South Wales Fire and Rescue said the fire was out by Sunday evening.

It was close to Wattsville but the fire service said the no-one was in danger.

Four fire crews tackled the blaze which had a mile-long “firefront”.

The grass and bracken blaze had been monitored overnight and crews were called in for a second time after it flared up on Sunday morning.

A fire service spokesperson earlier said: “We have sent additional crews.

“We’ve had lots of calls about it because it is visible all through the valley. It died down overnight but has flared up again.

“There will be large volumes of smoke in this area due to atmospheric conditions but properties in the Wattsville area will be unaffected.

“Complicated wind patterns are taking the firefront in two directions.”
