Croatia — Some 700 hectares (1,730 acres) of land, mostly pine forests and olive orchards, caught fire overnight Friday in southern Croatia near the Adriatic coast, rescue services said, cited by AFP.
Dozens of firemen and local volonteers have been dispatched to the area around the town of Makarska. Early Saturday, about a dozen fire-fighting planes and helicopters were sent in to fight the blaze, they said.
Strong winds hampered attempts to control the fire but so far houses are safe, rescue services said.
The local electricity network was switched off as a precaution, Hina news agency reported.
