USA — Smoke from a brush fire apparently caused a crash involving at least 10 vehicles on an interstate in south-central Washington, leaving one person dead and forcing authorities to close a long stretch of the highway Thursday.

A State Patrol dispatcher said emergency crews were at the scene of the collision, on Interstate 90 at milepost 122, east of Ellensburg. The highway was closed to eastbound traffic for several miles, according to a state Department of Transportation spokeswoman.

The state patrol dispatcher said smoke from a brush fire in the median is believed to have caused the crash, which included multiple tractor-trailers. The Daily-Record of Ellensburg reported that about 50 gallons of diesel fuel were spilled and that the highway would be closed for several hours.
