South Africa — A female motorist was severely injured on Sunday when she accidentally drove into a veld fire in Embalenhle, Mpumalanga paramedics said.
She sustained severe burns and was taken to the Highveld Medi-Clinic for treatment, ER24 spokesperson Andre Visser said.
The woman had been travelling on Embalenhle Road when she had visibility problems due to a large cloud of smoke from the veld fire.
Due to poor visibility, the woman then allegedly veered off the road and into the burning veld, said Visser.
Another two veld fires near the N12 freeway resulted in a 12-car pile-up because of the thick smoke.
As multiple emergency services vehicles arrived at the scene, it was established that approximately 20 patients sustained injuries in the collisions, said Visse
