USA — An elderly Jefferson Davis County man died Saturday afternoon while burning grass in a field around his home.

Jefferson Davis County Coroner Greg Blackwell said 83-year-old Homer Ellis McLeod was burned to death after being overcome by the heat and flames near his Berry Street home in Prentiss.

Residents reported seeing the field around McLeod’s home on fire.

Those flames then spread to a nearby mobile home.

Firefighters spotted McLeod’s body lying in the burning grass when they were putting out the fire at his neighbor’s mobile home.

The coroner believes his death may be the first heat related death of the year.

Temperatures Saturday reached a record 103 degrees in Prentiss.
