Australia — Retired High Court judge Ian Callinan will oversee mediation talks between Western Power, 97 Toodyay bushfire victims and the local shire in August.

The talks were set down at a Supreme Court directions hearing yesterday for August 30 and 31 before Mr Callinan as an independent arbitrator.

The residents want up to $15 million in compensation from Western Power over the blaze which destroyed 38 homes in December 2009.
If the talks fail, the case will go to trial before Supreme Court Chief Justice Wayne Martin.
