India — Poonch (J&K), May 17 (PTI) A large number of mines planted along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir exploded following a forest fire in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, triggering panic among residents.

However, no damage to life or property was reported as the explosions in the minefield, set up to stop infiltration from PoK, continued throughout the night, officials said today

A major forest fire ripped through several acres of land in PoK and spread to two to three kms along the LoC in Balakote belt of Poonch last night, they said.

Army, forest officials, villagers and police rushed to the area and after several hours of effort extinguished the fire, they said.

The damage caused to the minefield will soon be assessed, a senior army official said.
