Canada — Help is on its way for crews trying to smother a raging wildfire that has ravaged a northern Alberta town.

British Columbia is sending 120 firefighters and Ontario is deploying another 80 to Slave Lake where a blaze that forced 7,000 people from their homes remains out of control.

Police say one-third of the town has been destroyed or damaged.

Premier Ed Stelmach has asked key government ministries and agencies to deal with the immediate needs of residents.

The premier says the federal government has already provided some cots and blankets for evacuees as well as generators for health services trailers.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has also indicated to the premier that additional federal resources will be made available if needed.
